This is Palatial Pools' Melbourne salt chlorinator repair page — not a suburb template and not the sizing calculator. From Abbotsford we test the water, the cell and the flow so you do not buy a new cell because a screen lied.

Send a photo of the screen while the pump is running, plus your latest water test. Turn the chlorinator off if it smells burnt or the power cord is damaged.

The problem we solve

Low-salt alarms after you already salted, green water with the unit “on”, white scale that returns in days, blank screens, and flat free chlorine at 100% output are classic Melbourne chlorinator complaints. Cold water, scale, short run time and a worn cell all look the same on the display until someone measures.

  • Controller says low salt when the pool may already be in range
  • Low flow while returns are still pushing water
  • Heavy white scale on the plates that returns quickly after cleaning
  • Full output selected but free chlorine stays low
  • Blank, resetting or burnt-smelling controller

Process

Water first. Flow second. Cell output third. Settings and parts last. That order stops you paying for a cell when salinity, stabiliser or a dirty filter was the real choke.

  1. Test the water — independent salt and free chlorine, not only the screen
  2. Check the flow — confirm water is actually moving through the cell
  3. Test the output — inspect plates and see whether the cell is producing gas
  4. Fix and adjust — clean where safe, correct timers, replace proven failed parts

What is included

We check real salt and chlorine in the water, flow through the cell, plate condition and scale, output settings and timers, power to the cell, and whether the chlorinator is still sized for the pool. Outcomes range from settings and balance fixes, to cell clean or replacement, to controller repair or a quoted new unit.

  • In — independent salinity check, cell inspection, flow confirmation, polarity / self-clean behaviour where the model supports it, clear repair vs replace advice
  • Out — blind cell swaps from a screenshot; acid-bathing a cell to death on a weekly “clean”; treating this page as the chlorinator sizing calculator
  • Wider pad faults — pump, filter and heater issues that starve the cell belong on equipment repairs or diagnostics

Common faults we prove on site

  • Low salt after salting — independent salinity reading, plate inspection, compare with controller diagnostics before adding more salt.
  • Scale that returns fast — calcium hardness, pH and alkalinity first; confirm polarity reversing before blaming “bad water” alone.
  • Full output, low chlorine — cell life, run hours, chlorine demand, stabiliser and circulation before condemning the unit.

Outcomes

  • Settings fixed — water balanced and timers matched to the pool
  • Cell sorted — scale cleaned safely or a verified replacement cell fitted
  • Controller repaired — power fault fixed or a replacement unit quoted

Cell and controller parts are quoted after the fault is proven. Need capacity maths for a new unit? Use the salt chlorinator calculator, then book a site check — we still verify volume, run time and water balance on the pad.

Chlorinator FAQs

  • Trust the salt reading? Not always — cold water and dirty cells skew the display. Test the water independently.
  • Why the constant scale? High calcium or poor balance. Acid cleaning too often ruins the cell.
  • Does 100% output mean it works? It means the box is trying. The cell can still be dead.
  • Can it cause a green pool? Yes if output is low — but bad flow or low stabiliser can too.
  • Replace cell and box together? Only if both are failed or very old. We check what actually needs replacing.
  • Calculator or repair visit? Sizing estimates live on /salt-chlorinator/; faults and scale belong here.
