How pool heat-pump sizing works
Size from heat loss, target use and available time, not pool volume or advertised output alone.

Overview
Two pools with the same volume can need different heat pumps. Surface area, cover use, wind, target temperature, starting temperature, season, daily operating window and electrical supply change the required duty and heat-up time.
Check first
- Measure pool length, width, average depth and exposed water surface area in metres.
- Set the realistic target temperature and dates or months when the pool will be used.
- Record whether a fitted cover will be used whenever the pool is not occupied.
- Note wind exposure, shade, nearby walls and the proposed equipment position.
- Record existing pump, pipe size, filter, available switchboard capacity and the preferred heat-up time.
Stop and call a technician
- The existing heater trips, leaks refrigerant or shows electrical damage.
- The proposed location cannot meet manufacturer airflow or service clearances.
- Electrical capacity or cable route is unknown.
- The pool shares complex spa, solar or automation hydraulics.
- A sales quote uses output figures without the rating conditions or a stated heat-up assumption.
